Same old tale

of greed, corruption, lack of foresight and apathy among both the general public and officials.

Bangalore has three (or four) river valleys and all the waste water from all the nullahs and drains goes there. As is par for the course in any Indian city/town/village, encroachments, with the tacit support of officials have grabbed land in these valleys, lake beds and large nullahs and have blocked the flow of water. This has resulted in large scale flooding in various parts of the city because the water has nowhere to go.

Bangalore has grown like mad in the past fifteen years or so (or at least thats what I hear, I have only been here close to ten). So the obvious thing to expect would be that the infrastructure would have kept pace. To say that it has not would be an understatement. Roads are still as narrow as they were, while traffic has gone up many fold. With rising incomes and lack of public transport (what we have is a joke), there are many more vehicles on the road and according to the RTO, about 800 vehicles are registered every day! There is increasing mayhem on the roads which just can't take this load. Roads take more than six months to be laid (hey, we ARE laid back you know) and less than two weeks to be wiped away.

Will we learn from this? Unlikely. The rains will go away after some time and it will be back to apathy. The officials know it and hence don't give a damn. Bangaloreans will still go ahead and vote Gowda in the next elections (hey, we ARE stupid you know) and it will be more of the same. Sometimes I think Bangaloreans think that they are different from the rest of India. They are not. They are as lazy, corrupt, short sighted, selfish, graceless and stupid as the rest of India.
