State of the roads in Bangalore

The state of the roads in Bangalore is going from bad to worse. Today there was a huge traffic jam on Hosur road in the morning. Lucking I was on my bike and was able to avoid the worst of it. I can only sympathize with the drivers of four wheeled vehicles. They must have reached their destinations stressed out, angry and frustrated. No wonder road rage is becoming a problem in Bangalore.

Dharam Singh can't handle his own weight, how is he going to handle the government! His ministers keep making statement after statement, giving deadlines after deadlines for completing work on filling potholes (note that this is not laying a new tarmac which is essential, just filling potholes). Unfortunately, nothing happens. This government is turning out to be as bad as the J. H. Patel one which was famous for inaction. Not that this is a big surprise, since the JD (S) is part of this government.

Comments:
We need an out of band fast communication. Like we have metro in Kolkata or suburb trains in Mumbai. When several hundered vehicles are being registered in 5 RTOs of Bangalore everyday, it is sure we need an alternative.

In addition, the traffic is extremely unruly. You'll feel like duniya's selfish people have gathered in Bangalore road. Everyone wants to dodge, cut another's path. No respect to anyone's right of way. The traffic just sucks. Filling potholes will surely increase speed of vehicles; but we must seek alternatives. Like fast underground/stilt mass transport. Car pool. Working from home one or 2 days a week.

Yep Koushik, we need to think of creative ways to solve Bangalore's traffic problems. A multi pronged approach is the only solution.

1. Better public transport - Bangalore's bus fleet size is a large percentage of the fleet size of Mumbai, but no one can doubt which is a far more efficient service.

2. Metro - get it moving ASAP. And most of it should be below the ground to avoid disruptions to the road traffic. Most of it now is above the ground and only about ten percent is below the ground. WTF is the government thinking?

3. Work from home - put in place policies that help broadband companies roll out in more places with less cost

4. Repair the roads - fill potholes pronto, if they reappear, black list the contractor and publish his name in the newspapers

5. Enforce lane discipline - discipline the two wheeler guys and the auto drivers first. The rest will fall into place

6. Finish the flyovers - and stop building more. To me an underpass makes more sense.
